I don’t use social media to connect with people.
I mostly stepped away in 2016. More and more of what I saw was vitriolic and bizarre, and I had already been thinking about whether I wanted any part of it. I decided I didn’t.
I’m pretty introverted, and posting about my life isn’t appealing. I’ve regretted posting opinions too many times. They change, or they get more nuanced, and I don’t want an old take sitting there as if it were still mine. I think people share too much these days and think they need an opinion on everything. I want to be private and sometimes ignorant.
The public emotion on those platforms is more than I want. I’d rather know someone from how we actually interact than from what they post. That goes both ways. I don’t want a post to stand in for who someone is, or for who I am.
I still look at Instagram, X, and Reddit for a few topics. I don’t post, comment, share, friend, or otherwise take part. It’s for reading, not interaction.
